Dreaming Big and Working Hard in Small Town Iowa

Entering a Season of Thankfulness

Welcome to November, friends!  We are coming up to a favorite holiday at the Beyer house -- Thanksgiving.  Yes, I know I just told you that I loved Halloween.  But Halloween is my number two, just behind Thanksgiving.  (Really, I just love all reasons to celebrate.)  Anyway, in honor of Thanksgiving, the focus on the blog this month is going to be thankfulness.

I read a quote several years ago that asked, “What if all you woke up with tomorrow was what you thanked God for today?”  Whoa.  That was hard to read.  Not because I thought it was wrong, but because I was faced with just how many things I take for granted everyday.  So with  that in mind, let’s kick off November with a list of things I forget to be thankful for, but would be lost without.

  1. Clean water. The CDC reports that, worldwide, 11% of the population does not have access to an improved water source.  How wild is it that we can turn on the faucet in our kitchen and have a seemingly endless supply of water, and there are those in our world, in 2020, who don’t have that same opportunity.  Every time you turn on your faucet, be thankful.
  2. A warm house.  I am that cranky lady that usually makes her family freeze until November 1st and refuses to turn the heat on.  I don’t know, something must have melted my Scrooge-like heart this year, because I caved far earlier than I ever have.  But that’s what so amazing - I can make that choice to turn the heat on.  I cannot imagine not having the choice to be warm.  Yet, there are so many who don’t even have a shelter over their head, let alone a furnace.
  3. The right to vote in the upcoming election.  For her history class, Ella just finished a research report on the Women’s Suffrage movement, which helped women get the right to vote in the United States in 1920.  It was such a wonderful refresher for me on these amazing women who wanted to make the world better for those who would come after.  Ladies, just 100 years ago, we would not have had a say in Tuesday’s decision.  That is such a short amount of time in our history.  I have to share a line from Ella’s paper:  she wrote, “Always remember to say thank you to those who came before and sacrificed so much for us to vote.”  Do not squander their hard work and let others make your decisions.  VOTE.

The blog needs to YOU to participate this month, folks!  Please share with us things that you’re thankful for.  Let’s have an abundance of gratitude fill up this page all month long!

I'm also thankful for YOU!  Have a great week.
